Hong Kong flight attendants learn martial arts
Hong Kong Airlines has its entire flight attendants learn martial arts to help deal with rude or drunk passengers.
Hong Kong Airlines said yesterday that all employees are invited to attend Wing Chun training - a martial art for close-range combat.
According to AFP, this airline often has trouble with disorderly passengers, usually three times a week.
Eva Chan, the airline's deputy director of information, said two weeks ago, a flight crew used martial arts techniques learned during a flight from Beijing to Hong Kong.
"A passenger was sick but seemed drunk and didn't feel well. A flight attendant came to serve him and found his flexibility helped because the man was very heavy," Chan said.
"Normally, a flight attendant would not be able to handle a fat man, especially when he is drunk, but with practice, she was able to handle it easily."
Lumpy Tang, a 22-year-old flight attendant, said she never imagined that kung fu would be part of her job.
"We were surprised at first, but after a few lessons, we really enjoyed Wing Chun," Tang said.
"You won't be able to predict what will happen on the plane, so Wing Chun is very useful because it is very agile," Tang said.
Master Katherine Cheung said this martial art is very suitable for flight crews.
"This subject is easy to learn but not easy to master," Cheung added.
